City of Memphis Hackathon November 15-17, 2024 FedEx Institute of Technology

Fourteen teams developed and presented solutions at the 2024 City Hackathon. Each team selected one of three challenges to focus on when designing their solution: 1) Blight and Neighborhood Improvement; 2) Transportation for Workforce Development; or 3) AI & Smart City Technology. Below is a video of each team’s presentation as well as project descriptions and artifacts.

Challenge #1: Blight & Neighborhood Improvement

Blight Busters

Project Description: MyPart901 is an app meant to increase access to volunteer-worthy blight reduction efforts and gamify it to excite Memphis nonprofits and volunteers.  The app gives users points, badges and other incentives when they report new blight issues and/or volunteer to clean them up.

X (Formerly Blight) Busters

Project Description: Interactive dashboard web platform that allows users to upload their own data to overlay with blighted properties needing improvement. AI powered chat bots provide users with exploratory data analysis and assist in making connections between multiple data sets.

Byte the Blight, Grand Prize Winner

Project Description: A Blight Layer API Gateway that will summarize blight data across departments and allow GIS-informed blight remediation by the civic maintenance technicians, citizens, and nonprofits. It will also allow for 3rd-party mapping services to provide auto-routing and crowdsourced data retrieval/submission.

Memphis 4ever

Project Description: Blight Bounties: An application that empowers Memphians to address 311-reported blight and claim cash rewards from the City. The Uber of community cleanup.

Clean Slate, Challenge #1 Winner

Project Description: A program that will allow adults re-entering from incarceration and youth to organize neighborhood cleanups and put cash in their pockets while beautifying their City.

Rising from the Ashes

Project Description: Shifting focus across departments to galvanize community support for repurposing vacant lots as gardens. The City needs help from the communities they serve, but the people actually need a reason to maintain it.

Challenge #2: Transportation for Workforce Development

Data Force

Project Description:MATA Ambassadors is an online information/service referral tool that shows public transit routes and offerings by neighborhood as well as a trip planning guide.

Memphis Moves sMATA

Project Description:A ride-sharing service app where users can request and offer rides in their friend/family networks. The driver can set custom fare amounts based on their own preferences.

Project Description:The Employee Transit Network would build on current MATA on-demand ride services like Groove and Ready! by allowing riders to pre-schedule rides to work and increase last-mile access beyond existing transit routes.

Project Description:Website prototype where multiple local employers can upload transportation needs/schedules for employees and pool resources to provide rides to and from work.

Challenge #3: AI & Smart City Technology

NEAIA, Challenge #3 Winner

Project Description: An AI assistant designed to alleviate pressure on emergency dispatch systems by redirecting non-emergency calls and helping individuals report non-urgent issues effectively, educating the public on proper 911 usage, and enhancing response times for true emergencies.

Project Description:Memphis All in One (MAIO): A website to transform Memphis into a smarter, more connected, and citizen-friendly city providing a centralized platform for exploration, payment, transportation, and complaint management.
