DOING BUSINESS WITH THE CITY
The procurement function is essential to the financial stability of a local government and should be entrusted to professionals. Across all divisions, the City of Memphis spends an estimated amount of $900 million each year on an array of goods and services. This includes everything from purchasing a ream of copier paper to preparing rental agreements, lease packages, technical specifications for requests for proposals (RFPs), contracts for professional services, timetables for construction and purchasing fleet vehicles. The Sourcing & Purchasing oversees the Sourcing & Purchasing Department, which functions as a service agency for all divisions of the City. The range of responsibilities of the Purchasing Agent and staff members extends well beyond buying goods and services.
Ultimately, the Purchasing Department supports all City of Memphis operations by functioning as a central unit for the procurement of goods, materials, equipment, and services (including construction) required by the City. Additionally, the Purchasing Department is responsible for the disposal of abandoned and surplus personal property owned by the City.
