ABOUT
The Office of Creative & Cultural Economy advances Memphis’ vibrant cultural landscape and fosters economic growth by championing, cultivating, and investing in its artists, cultural organizations, and creative enterprises.
Memphis is not waiting on the future—it is shaping it now.
As the cultural capital of the Mississippi Delta region, Memphis brings a unique cultural perspective to the world. We are an attractive, equitable, innovative, and culturally rich city where creative genius is not a distant memory or dream, but a living, breathing force powered by our people: individual artists, cultural organizations, creative enterprises, and the policies that support them.
Through the OCCE, the City of Memphis promotes, strengthens, and catalyzes the cultural economy while developing strategies to retain and attract new contributors to the creative workforce.
OCCE Infrastructure and Policy Framework
1. Validation
Artists and culture workers need public acknowledgment, visibility, and inclusion. OCCE works to uplift Memphis creatives through platforms, awards, citywide campaigns, and cultural representation to ensure that creative work is recognized as essential.
2. Material Support
Creative careers require direct funding, space, equipment, and resources. OCCE facilitates access to funding, city-owned assets, and cross-sector partnerships that limit barriers to production so artists and organizations can do their work.
3. Market Demand
A thriving creative economy requires a healthy market for cultural goods and services. OCCE supports programs that grow audiences, expand cultural tourism, encourage local investment, and create new pathways for creative work to be purchased, presented, and celebrated.
4. Information
OCCE aims to be a central source of data, insight, and opportunity for Memphis’s creative sector. We gather and share information on funding, policy, economic impact, and best practices to support informed decision-making by creatives and stakeholders.
5. Networks
Community and networking are the backbones of the creative economy. OCCE strengthens networks by hosting events, listening sessions, and collaborations that foster connections among artists, organizations, funders, and institutions.
6. Professional Development
Creative success depends on more than talent — it requires training, mentorship, and business skills. OCCE offers and partners on workshops, strategic coaching, and career development initiatives tailored to artists, creative entrepreneurs, and cultural leaders.
