CITY ATTORNEY / LAW
ABOUT US
The Law Division, or City Attorney’s office, for the City of Memphis is headed by the Chief Legal Officer, Tannera Gibson, and is assisted by deputy and assistant city attorneys and other staff.
The Law Division serves a number of vital functions for City government. Attorneys within the Law Division work in two main areas: contracts and litigation. City attorneys on the contract team provide counsel, oversight, and review of thousands of contracts annually for City services and goods. City attorneys working on the litigation team are responsible for defending lawsuits filed against the City, prosecuting violations of city ordinances, and prosecuting blight and nuisance claims. The attorneys also provide legal advice to all Divisions of the City of Memphis to facilitate operational needs and good government.
The Law Division also provides services through its Claims, Permits, Metro Alarms, Ethics, and Risk Management departments, in addition to managing and responding to public records requests.
