MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Feb. 9, 2026 Memphis Mayor Paul Young has appointed Dr. Eric D. Harris as Director of the Memphis Public Libraries, subject to confirmation by the Memphis City Council. Harris brings a lifelong commitment to education, public service, and community-centered leadership to one of the city’s most trusted institutions.

A Memphis native and graduate of Memphis City Schools, Harris brings more than two decades of experience spanning classroom instruction, educational leadership, nonprofit management, and public policy. His career reflects a deep belief in learning as a foundation for opportunity, economic mobility, and community well-being.

“Eric Harris understands Memphis because he is Memphis,” said Mayor Paul Young. “He brings a strong record of leadership and a clear vision for how libraries can support literacy, workforce development, and lifelong learning for residents at every stage of life.”

Harris began his career as a classroom educator and coach before advancing into leadership roles, including assistant principal, principal, and Director of School Operations across PreK–12 environments. His work has focused on instructional excellence, organizational management, and public accountability.

He most recently served as President of JESSRAN Corporation, a nonprofit organization working at the intersection of education, child development, and community-based service delivery. His experience supporting children from birth through early childhood, combined with applied research in urban affairs and public policy, has shaped his belief that libraries are essential civic infrastructure that strengthen communities.

“Libraries are gateways to opportunity,” Harris said. “They are places where literacy begins, skills are built, technology is accessible, and communities connect. I am honored to serve Memphis by strengthening our libraries as inclusive spaces that support learning across the lifespan.”

Harris holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and Secondary Education from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville; a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Christian Brothers University; an Executive Master of Business Administration from the University of Memphis; and a Ph.D. in Urban Affairs and Public Policy from the University of Memphis.

As Library Director, Harris will oversee the Memphis Public Libraries system and work with city leadership, staff, and community partners to expand access to information, strengthen literacy initiatives, and ensure libraries continue to meet the evolving needs of Memphis residents.
