MEMPHIS, Tenn., March 30, 2026. Expansion of the Greenbelt Landing is underway at the north end of Mud Island in downtown Memphis. Today, the City of Memphis and the Army Corps of Engineers celebrated the official groundbreaking, marking the start of this project to enhance recreational access and improve boating facilities.
Greenbelt Park spans approximately 102 acres of public green space along the Mississippi River at River Mile 738. When complete, the $6 million expansion will provide additional docking space for passenger riverboat cruise ships traveling along the Mississippi River. It will also enhance the park’s infrastructure and amenities, including repairs to the existing boat ramp, installation of mooring anchors, ADA-compliant parking upgrades, and additional lighting.
“Strengthening our connection to the Mississippi River and expanding opportunities for recreation and tourism is a priority for us,” said Memphis Mayor Paul Young. “The Greenbelt Landing expansion improves access to the riverfront, supports economic activity, and makes the experience better for both residents and visitors.”
The project is the result of a Project Partnership Agreement between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the City of Memphis. It was made possible through $3 million in federal Community Directed Funding secured by U.S. Representative Steve Cohen (TN-09), matched by $3 million in non-federal funds from the city.
“I was proud to secure $3 million in federal funding to help make the Greenbelt Landing expansion a reality for Memphis,” said Congressman Cohen.“We deliver for Memphis—that’s what my team and I do. No matter how chaotic things may be in Washington, my focus is always on delivering real results back home. This investment builds on our work to strengthen our riverfront, support tourism, and to make the Mississippi River and our downtown waterfront more accessible for everyone in Memphis and TN-09.”
Construction of the Greenbelt Landing expansion is expected to be complete by September 2026. While the north parking lot on Mud Island remains closed during construction, two parking lots on Island Drive remain open. The Mud Island Park Boat Ramp remains open for boaters.
