The City of Memphis Division of Housing and Community Development (HCD) is hosting a free workshop to inform nonprofit housing developers of what is needed to become a designated Community Housing Development Organizations (CHDOs). The session will provide critical guidance on the requirements, benefits, and opportunities associated with CHDO designation.
Becoming a CHDO opens the door for nonprofits to access federal HOME funds designated for affordable housing development, including activities like acquisition, rehabilitation, and new construction for both rental and homeownership. To qualify, organizations must meet specific criteria related to their nonprofit status, mission, governance, and housing development capacity.
“CHDOs play a vital role in helping communities access quality, affordable housing,” said Twarla Guest, Administrator of Affordable Housing at HCD. “This workshop is designed to prepare local nonprofits to take on that role and make a lasting impact in their neighborhoods.”
Approved CHDOs may be eligible to receive federal HOME funds for eligible set-aside activities—including acting as the owner, developer, or sponsor of housing projects. These activities must comply with federal regulations outlined in 24 CFR 92 Subpart G.
The workshop will take place on August 6, 2025, from 10:30 am to 12 pm at the Benjamin L. Hooks Library, on 3030 Poplar Avenue. You need to RSVP on this link if you are planning to attend.
