“Smart Memphis Fiber gives us the infrastructure. Connecting 901 is how the City is putting that infrastructure to work in our neighborhoods,” said Memphis Mayor Paul Young. “We are starting in Orange Mound by connecting places people already use and creating new ways for residents to learn, access services, connect with one another and participate in the digital economy.”1

“Through Smart Memphis Fiber, mStreet Fiber and the City are building the backbone of a more connected Memphis,” said Adrian Kesler, President and General Manager of mStreet Fiber Memphis. “This partnership builds the foundation to connect more neighborhoods and bring useful technology into public spaces.”

Smart Memphis Fiber is a public-private partnership that will bring affordable fiber broadband to 85% of Memphis residents, including underserved neighborhoods that currently lack access to high-speed internet. mStreet Fiber Memphis’ network provides the City of Memphis with a high-capacity, redundant fiber backbone connecting more than 100 anchor sites, which will power free public Wi-Fi and smart city infrastructure. The broader network also passes schools, government buildings, health facilities, nonprofits, and businesses across the city.

The Launch also marks the activation of Connecting 901, the City’s effort to turn those anchor sites into places where residents can directly benefit from greater connectivity. In Orange Mound, the City has created a connected community corridor linking the Orange Mound Community Center, Library and Melrose Stadium through faster internet, public Wi-Fi and greater access to technology. The City will build on the Orange Mound model as construction reaches completion in additional neighborhoods.

Connecting 901 in Orange Mound includes:

  • Free high-speed public Wi-Fi at the Orange Mound Community Center, Library and Melrose Stadium
  • Digital literacy and skills programs at the Library and Community Center
  • Two expanded technology labs at the Community Center, one for seniors and one for youth, with 18 upgraded computer stations
  • New smart kiosks offering the MLGW Outage Map, MATA, Memphis 311, Library Digital Card signup, ePayments, Animal Services, Support Services (such as Memphis Cares and Residential Accessibility Resources), and MIA (Memphis Information Assistant chatbot)
  • New smart lobby displays sharing Community Center events, Parks & Neighborhoods programs, City updates, and weather and emergency alerts

To celebrate the Launch, the City and mStreet Fiber will host a “Senior 2 Senior” Tailgate for senior residents and high school students at the Orange Mound Community Center. Principal Andrea Talley and Melrose High School students, including the band, majorettes, cheerleaders, dance team and flag team, will join Smart Memphis Fiber partners and the community to celebrate their Senior Night and cheer the Golden Wildcats into the final game of the season.

“The Orange Mound Community Center is dedicated to building bridges between generations through programs that empower people of all ages. We look forward to welcoming residents into these new spaces and making Orange Mound a strong model for neighborhoods across Memphis,” said Justice Bolden, Director of Memphis Parks.
