MEMPHIS, Tenn., May 11, 2026 The City of Memphis has announced the three finalists for the city’s inaugural poet laureate position: Aisha Raison, Bria Saulsberry, and Jasmine Settles. These distinguished writers and cultural leaders represent the depth, diversity, and creativity of Memphis’ literary community.

 

The finalists will be honored during the Memphis Poet Laureate Induction Ceremony on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at Cossitt Library, 33 S. Front St. A reception will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the formal program at 5:30 p.m.

 

During the ceremony, Mayor Paul Young will announce Memphis’ first poet laureate. The selected poet will serve a two-year term focused on promoting literary expression, engaging communities across Memphis, and elevating poetry’s role in civic and cultural life.

 

The free public event will include light refreshments and opportunities for attendees to connect with local writers, creatives, and cultural leaders.

 

The poet laureate program marks a milestone for Memphis as the city expands its investment in literary arts and recognizes the importance of its creative community.
