MEMPHIS, Tenn., Oct 31, 2025 – The City of Memphis announced that following the retirement of Fire Services Director Gina Y. Sweat, Mayor Paul Young will nominate Colin Burress to serve as the next Fire Chief.
Burress has served with the Memphis Fire Department for nearly three decades, holding command and operational roles, most recently as Assistant Chief. His appointment will ensure stability and continuity in leadership as the department continues its work to protect residents and strengthen emergency services across Memphis.
Mayor Young said Burress brings deep experience and steady leadership to the role.
“Colin Burress is a seasoned public safety leader who understands the mission, the expectations of this community, and the demands of the job,” Mayor Young said. “His experience and steady hand will ensure a smooth transition for our department and for the residents we serve.”
If confirmed, Burress will lead the department’s ongoing efforts to enhance emergency response, support firefighter and paramedic readiness, and advance operational priorities that strengthen safety citywide.
Mayor Young will submit his nomination for confirmation to Memphis City Council.
