Kenneth Newton

Born and raised in Memphis, Assistant Fire Chief Kenneth Newton is a proud product of Memphis City Schools and a lifelong servant to the community he calls home. He began his journey in public safety in 1991 when he became an EMT, advancing to Paramedic in 1994. Chief Newton joined the Memphis Fire Department on October 26, 1992. After a brief departure in 1998, he returned to the department in November 5, 2001, continuing what would become a distinguished and impactful career.

 

Throughout his tenure, Chief Newton has pursued continuous professional development, attending specialized courses and training programs locally and across the nation—including the National Fire Academy, CN Rail, and FM Global to name a few. As a Firefighter/Paramedic, he served a great amount of at Engine 38 and Engine 34, gaining extensive field experience that would shape his leadership approach in later years.

 

Chief Newton was promoted to Fire Inspector in 2008 and Fire Lieutenant in 2009. In 2016, he rose to the rank of Battalion Chief, serving in Battalion 9. In 2018, he was assigned to the Fire Training Division as the Battalion Chief of Training, where he oversaw the organization and successful graduation of multiple recruit and lateral academies. During this time, he also identified and implemented the SIMSUShare simulation platform, enhancing the department’s training capabilities.

 

In 2019, he was promoted to Division Chief of Training, continuing to expand the department’s professional development programs and modernizing instructional methods. The following year, he transitioned to Division Chief of Administration and was appointed to the City of Memphis Vaccine Task Force. In this role, he led mobile community vaccination operations, strengthened partnerships with faith-based organizations, and established vaccine access points within underserved neighborhoods.

 

Since then, Chief Newton has served as Division Chief of Administration, supporting the Command Staff through policy development, legal and claims coordination, staffing management, and leading recruitment initiatives. Under his guidance, the department has implemented innovative, non-traditional strategies to attract new talent and strengthen workforce sustainability.

 

Chief Newton holds a Bachelor of Science in Management and Organizational Development from Bethel University and has completed significant coursework toward his Master of Science in the same concentration.

 

A devoted father, he enjoys traveling and golfing in his free time. Known for his professionalism, dedication, and commitment to service, Assistant Fire Chief Kenneth Newton enters this next chapter with a deep passion for the Memphis Fire Department and a steadfast focus on its future growth, innovation, and excellence.
