BRIC Grant Summary

The City of Memphis Fire Services Division received approval notification of a Federal (FEMA) and State (TEMA) grant for scoping a multi-function facility to be located on President’s Island on March 4th, 2024. This grant will be matched with local funds in a 75% Federal/State: 25% local ratio.

President’s Island, the primary location of the Port of Memphis, is a critical infrastructure site. Currently, Fire Station 32 provides the immediate emergency response for this location; however, the structure built in 1967 has exceeded its useful lifespan of about 50 years and lacks many current-day requirements and protections.

Shelby County Hazardous Mitigation Plan update (HMP) 2021 outlined an implementation strategy encompassing a new Fire Station, multi-purpose maritime facility(s), and other necessary infrastructure. The notable risks, vulnerabilities, and mitigation tenets shown below are examples to be addressed in the scoping.

Fire Rescue, Marine Rescue, Terrorism Response, Communal Response, Disaster Response, and Environmental Response.

Additionally, the new facility is envisioned to address many current operational needs, including providing continuous operational capabilities or hardening features for protection during major storm/flooding, tornado, or earthquake events.

Scoping is scheduled for completion in 2026
