Ribbon cutting set for Monday, Sept. 8 at 8:30 a.m.

MEMPHIS, Tenn., Sept. 5 — The City of Memphis will officially reopen Riverside Drive between Georgia Avenue and Beale Street following a series of enhancements designed to improve access, safety, and the overall riverfront experience.

ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held Monday, Sept. 8, at 8:30 a.m. at Riverside Drive and Beale Street. The public is invited to join city leaders and community partners for the celebration.

The newly reopened corridor includes:

  • two-lane road conversion to calm traffic and improve safety
  • New back-in angled parking to support safer access to Tom Lee Park and other riverfront destinations
  • more walkable, pedestrian-friendly layout that connects residents and visitors to downtown Memphis’ signature outdoor space

“We’re building a city where streets don’t just serve cars, they serve people,” said Mayor Paul Young. “Riverside is now safer, more accessible, and more connected to the heartbeat of downtown. This is what it looks like when we say yes to public space that works for everyone.”

As Memphis continues to transform its downtown core and invest in people-centered design, the Riverside Drive upgrades align with the city’s vision for a more inclusive, connected, and welcoming riverfront.

Drivers are encouraged to go slow, stay alert, and follow posted signage when using the new parking and traffic pattern.
