Have you ever thought about joining the Best in Blue? Forty new recruits are set to start training Monday, July 9, with the 126th Basic Recruit Class.

Joining the Memphis Police Department is more than simply fighting crime. You can also gain experience in specialized areas such as community outreach, information technology, crime scene investigation, and air support — just to name a few.

Requirements to join MPD include:

  • 21 years of age
  • valid driver’s license with a strong driving record
  • no violent misdemeanor or felony convictions
  • United States citizen

You must also have one of the following five requirements:

  • an associate’s degree (or a minimum of fifty-four semester hours with “C” grades or better) earned at a regionally accredited college or university
  • a minimum of an associate’s degree in criminal justice earned at a nationally accredited college or university
  • five years of full-time work experience and a high school diploma or education equivalency
  • two years of cumulative active duty military service with an honorable discharge
  • five years of active reserve military service

Basic Recruit applicants must successfully complete the following:

  • 1.5 mile run within 16:30 or less
  • obstacle course in 160 seconds or less
  • written exam
  • behavioral interview, background screening, psychological exam, clinical interview, and medical assessment

Police officer salaries start at $47,814 annually. Benefits include health, dental and life insurance, vision coverage, pension, deferred compensation, long and short term disability, and paid leave. You are eligible to retire after 25 years with MPD.

"The Memphis Police Department is one of the best departments in our nation,” Director Michael Rallings said. “We provide great opportunities to those who want to make a difference. Our goal is to continue to recruit new officers and to also retain the officers who currently work hard every day to keep our city safe. We are excited about our upcoming graduating class, and we look forward to the new police recruit classes that are scheduled to begin in the near future.”
