Mayor Jim Strickland announced the launch of HireMemphis, his new employment initiative that will provide local youth ages 16-24 with job opportunities.

My hope is for this website to be the place to go to find information for professional growth, employment or internships citywide.”

Ike Griffith, director of the Office of Youth Services said he believes this is a major step toward increasing the employment rate among young adults in Memphis.

“We encourage all local employers big or small to post a job for just one youth this summer,” Griffith said. “They are the future of this city, and we need to give them somewhere to comfortably seek professional opportunities, knowing the businesses that are willing and able to hire workers their age.”

Chief Human Resources Officer Alex Smith said that over the past month, the City has been reaching out to businesses throughout Memphis to ask for their participation in this project. Major employers such as AutoZone, International Paper, and FedEx have all agreed to post their openings on the website.

“With HireMemphis, Mayor Strickland is looking to create one place to make it easier for businesses to hire young people locally and for our youth to find opportunities that will teach them how to excel in the workplace,” Smith said.

Posting jobs is free, and only Memphis-area youth can apply for open positions.

Mayor Strickland also stressed that this initiative cannot be one-sided but should cater to both employers and youth. That’s why all job postings on will include each company’s age requirements for hiring (ages 16-17, 18-20, 20-21, or all the above), along with if transportation is provided. Also, the website will offer tools to help with creating resumes, writing cover letters and interviewing.
