City to offer free summer camp for kids, teens
Posted on 02/20/2018
Mayor Jim Strickland and Councilman Edmund Ford Jr. announced Tuesday that our community centers' Summer Day Camp will be free this year for Memphis children and teens.

The Division of Parks and Neighborhoods offers summer camp every year at its 24 community centers. Summer day camp for kids ages 5-12 is offered at all centers, with a specialized teen camp for ages 13-15 offered at select sites.

Through the seven-week camp, kids and teens participate in enrichment activities, including arts and crafts, playground games, field trips, and health and fitness. The 2018 Summer Camp is based on the theme of “Dream Builders,” where through service learning and play activities the campers will develop a focused plan for success in one of their dreams – whether to learn a new sport, achieve a fitness goal, or learn to draw. For the younger children, the camp will include a literacy component to support the goal of reaching third grade reading level.

Mayor Strickland said offering the summer camp for free is another way the City is reinvesting in Memphians – particularly young people.

“Positively impacting our young people is the moral calling of our time in this city,” Mayor Strickland said. “With the Council’s partnership, we’ll take another step in 2018 toward positively affecting more and more of our kids.”

Registration for this year’s camps will begin on April 7 at the community centers. To register a camper, please bring a driver’s license or state ID, birth certificate, proof of guardianship and proof of residency. Registration will be on a first-come, first-serve basis until the site capacity is reached.

Combined, the 24 community centers will serve 2,300 children through the summer camp program. Non-city residents may register for a $400 fee for the seven-week camp.

The Division of Parks and Neighborhoods will hire over 100 seasonal full-time day camp aides. Recruitment is currently open through Feb. 28. Please visit the Career Opportunities section of the City of Memphis website for information and to apply for these summer jobs.
