South Memphis residents now have another option when it comes to grocery shopping.

Cash Saver Grand OpeningCash Saver celebrated its grand opening in Southgate Center Wednesday with giveaways and a ribbon cutting. The store on South Third Street replaces a grocer that left earlier this year.

The new 31,000-square foot store has alleviated worries over the area becoming a food desert. The more than 55,000 people living within a three mile radius will now have increased access to fresh produce because of the store.

Cash Saver has also brought in 47 full-time jobs, most of which have been filled by employees from the community.

The grocery store is part of a $6.8 million private investment in Southgate Center. It was made possible by a Community Builder PILOT from the Economic Growth Engine of Memphis and Shelby County, which is the economic development arm of local government.

Community Builder PILOTs are geared towards benefiting neighborhoods and improving quality of life. Both Mayor Jim Strickland, whose approval was needed to move forward with the project, and Councilman Edmund Ford, Jr. were at the grand opening Wednesday.

“When the grocery store on South Third closed in January, it left a big part of South Memphis without close access to fresh food,” Mayor Strickland said. “We went to work alongside community partners to enable a new store to come.”

“We’re here to celebrate Cash Saver being here for the long run,” said Councilman Ford, who spearheaded the effort to attract the grocer.

This is the fifth Cash Saver store in Memphis. It will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
