Buy901 business directory launches
Posted on 02/21/2019
Nearly 600 businesses, certified as minority or women Buy901owned, are now included in a free directory that allows users to search Memphis businesses by name, owner, skill or trade. launched this February, after the Office of Business Diversity and Compliance brainstormed ways to increase community awareness and interest in registered vendors certified with the City of Memphis.

Mayor Jim Strickland announced the launch of in his State of the City address January 28, saying that the directory is “a long-term way to build equity in our economy and attack poverty.” While the percentage of City contracting dollars going to minority and women-owned businesses increased from 12 percent to 24 percent over the last two years, Mayor Strickland and the OBDC understand that government contracting alone won’t create a more inclusive economy. It is imperative to make sure all businesses have a seat at the table as those businesses are only as strong as the city that supports them.

“Buy901 will help raise awareness of the MWBEs in the community, so people will know they’re ready and willing to work,” Office of Business Diversity and Compliance Director Joann Massey said.
