Investigative Services
The Investigative Services branch of the Memphis Police Department is responsible for thoroughly reviewing the details surrounding every crime committed in Memphis. Investigative Services works closely with all branches of the Memphis Police Department and other law enforcement agencies to solve crime.
Investigative Services is comprised of Crimes Against Persons and Crimes Against Property investigative bureaus, the Felony Response Unit and Crime Scene Investigations.
Crimes Against Persons bureaus handle homicides, sexual assaults, and crimes of an immediate personal nature.
Crimes Against Property bureaus handles burglary, vehicle theft, larceny and incidents where property theft is the principal crime involved.
Sex Crimes / Juvenile Abuse
This unit is responsible for handling investigations involving any sexual or physical abuse crime.
Homicide
The Homicide Bureau is responsible for conducting all investigations related to homicides, suicides, and natural or accidental deaths.
Domestic Violence
The Domestic Violence Unit (DV) is responsible for investigating incidents involving domestic violence. The DV Unit works closely with the Citizens Dispute Office and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office regarding Domestic Violence warrants and protective orders.
Missing Persons
The Missing Persons Unit handles all cases involving missing persons and runaways.
Felony Assault
This unit was formed to aggressively investigate aggravated assaults in the same manner as homicides.
Robbery
This unit investigates robberies citywide, including business and bank robberies.
Special Operations
Air Support
The Air Support Unit is often utilized by other MPD squads and outside agencies in various operations. Helicopters flown by Air Support include three Bell Jet Ranger helicopters and a Eurocopter A-Star helicopter.
Harbor Patrol
This unit is responsible for the safety and enforcement of marine activities along the Mississippi River. The Harbor Patrol currently has a 27-foot Boston Whaler, two 25-foot Army Green boats, a 16-foot aluminum weld John Boat, and a Moose Boat shared with the Memphis Fire Department.
TACT Unit
This elite unit, specially trained to respond to various emergency situations, is responsible for handling barricade situations, hostage rescues, counter terrorism, and high risk felony apprehensions.
Mounted Patrol
Mounted Patrol performs a dual function within the department — providing assistance with crowd control or traffic control and providing positive community relations.
Canine Unit
This unit utilizes highly trained dogs who, along with their handlers, make-up a unique team responsible for building searches and suspect searches, as well as narcotic and explosive detection.
Traffic
Traffic is divided into four sections: Motorcycle Squad (Motors), Special Traffic Investigation Squad (STIS), the DUI unit, and Police Service Technicians (PSTs).

STIS
The Special Traffic Investigations Squad (STIS) is responsible for investigating crashes involving fatalities or serious critical injuries. STIS is also responsible for investigating crashes involving citizens over the age of 85.
DUI
The DUI Unit, formerly Metro DUI, responds to calls in the city and all MPD DUI officers are specially trained in the testing of drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
Motors
The primary function of Motors is the enforcement of traffic laws, the investigation of crashes and the participation in special events. Motors, as well as, other members of the Traffic Division, are periodically assigned as traffic control for major motion pictures filmed in Memphis which have included the films “21 Grams”, Hustle and Flow”, “Black Snake Moan” and “My Blueberry Nights”.
