About crime statistics
Part One Crimes are made up of seven offenses - homicide, burglary, robbery, rape, vehicle theft, aggravated assault, and larceny. The FBI tabulates the total number of Part One Crimes committed per city to calculate the Crime Index for cities in the United States and these statistics are published in their Uniform Crime Report (UCR). The UCR is not released by the FBI until October of each year for the preceding year's stats. Please Note: In UCR Summary Reporting only the most serious crime in any offense is counted for statistical figures where as in National Incident Based Reporting (NIBR) all reported offenses are counted. The Crime Index involves Violent Crimes and Property Crimes. Here is a breakdown of what constitutes a violent or property crime:

Violent Crimes

  • Homicide
  • Rape
  • Robbery
  • Assault/Aggravated Assault

Property Crimes

  • Burglary (Includes Residential, Business, and Non-Residential Burglary)
  • Larceny
  • Motor Vehicle Theft (MVT)
