What is Mentor Memphis?
Mentor Memphis seeks to reduce crime and inspire young people in Memphis to create a positive trajectory for their future. Mayor Strickland hopes to enlist the help of 100 City of Memphis employees in addition to businesses and faith based groups in the community to become mentors to young people in Memphis. This program provides City of Memphis employees with a unique opportunity to give back to their community by working with and developing the leaders of tomorrow in order to make life better for all Memphians.

Why should you mentor?
By mentoring, you will be helping at-risk youth and subsequently will contribute to making Memphis youth :

  • 52% less likely to skip school
  • 46% less likely to use illegal drugs
  • 55% more likely to go to college
  • 81% more likely to participate regularly in sports and extra-curricular activities
  • 78% more likely to volunteer in the community
  • 130% more likely to hold a leadership position in a club or sports team
  • 90% more likely to want to become a mentor in the future

You will also be building up self-confidence, strengthening self-expression, and improving attitudes towards schooling within the young people and future leaders of Memphis.

Additionally, as a mentor, you will receive up to 10 paid volunteer hours per month during your scheduled shift.
