Solid Waste Management

Solid Waste Management is responsible for the collection and disposal of all solid waste within the City following State and Federal Laws.
In an ongoing effort to reduce the amount of solid waste being disposed of in Memphis area landfills, Solid Waste Management has developed and implemented a variety of recycling programs and initiatives. Programs include curbside recycling, yard waste composting, household appliance recycling and drop-off centers.

Department Services

Residents of Memphis receiving City of Memphis solid waste services may now lease additional City issued 90-gallon garbage carts for $5.00 each per month. The fee will be added to your monthly solid waste fee on your utility bill.

  • Place your carts, bins, and curbside trash on the curb (not in a storm drain) within three (3) feet of the street.
  • Cart handle should face your house (not the street).
  • Position carts, bins, and curbside trash free of overhead obstructions (wires).
  • Place solid waste and recyclables at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day.
  • Carts and bins should be removed by 9:p.m. on collection day.
  • Allow 4 feet between carts, bins and curbside trash and away from fixed objects (utilities, fire hydrants, mailboxes, etc.).
  • Check online or call 311 for collection day changes due to holiday or inclement weather.
  • Do not block cart or curbside trash access with parked car(s).

The Memphis County Solid Waste department works hard to provide environmentally responsible collection and disposal of trash, yard waste, and recycling. Starting in 2015, we began to offer 96-gallon carts to our solid waste customers. So please join me in this recycling effort, whether at work, on the go, or with our new 96-gallon recycling carts.

The City of Memphis supports the Shelby County’s household hazardous waste facility located at 6305 Haley Rd, Memphis, TN 38134.
