Myron Lowery is the Chairman of the Memphis Charter Commission. He was elected to the Commission with 60% of the vote on August 3, 2006 and he campaigned on a platform calling for term limits for city officials, staggered terms for members of the City Council and the requirement for voters to approve any sale of Memphis Light Gas and Water.
Myron is a man who cares about people. He views his volunteer service on the Charter Commission as an extension of the community service he has provided most of his life. For his efforts he has been honored by the Tennessee Jaycees as one of "Three Outstanding Young Men" in the state and the United States Jaycees honored him as one of "Ten Outstanding Young Men in America". In 2005, Chairman Lowery was inducted into the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame for his community service.
Myron has served as a board member of the Tennessee Municipal League, Tennessee Quality, Goals for Memphis, Leadership Memphis, Goodwill Boys Club, The Memphis Zoo, the Headstart Policy Council, and the Board of Trustees of LeMoyne-Owen College.
In the national arena, Myron is currently the Treasurer of United Negro College Fund's National Alumni Council. He served as Vice-President of the National Association of Black Journalists and as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the Democratic Municipal Officials. In 1996, he was a speaker at the Democratic National Convention. He is currently serving his fourth term as a member of the Democratic National Committee and he is a member of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials.
Lowery started the New Year's Day Prayer Breakfast and the New Year's Day Jazz Champagne Brunch. Donations from these events have been made to more than 165 organizations. Lowery is also a co-founder of "Salute to Fatherhood" and "Fathers Day Out". These programs honor deserving fathers annually during Father's Day weekend.
Myron has also helped to organize four gun buy-back programs where 1,887 guns have been turned in and destroyed. His annual "Done With Guns" seminar encourages young people to stay away from guns.
Chairman Lowery has a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from LeMoyne-Owen College, a Master of Science in Education from New York University and a Master of Science in Urban Education from the University of Tennessee. He holds an honorary degree from Southeastern College of Technology.
Myron was recently re-elected to his fifth term on the Memphis City Council and has served as Chairman and Vice-Chairman. He is the only African American elected At-Large as well as from a Super District. In 2008, he will again serve as Vice-Chairman.
Chairman Lowery and his wife Mary have one daughter, Carol Reaves and two sons, Carlos Reed and Mickell Lowery.
